Hao Xiaojiang, Researcher and Chief Scientist of the State Key Laboratory of Functions and Applications of Medical Plants at GMU, Was Admitted as an Academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences

Chinese Academy of Sciences officially announced the list of the 2019 new academicians on November 22, 2019. There are a total of 64 new members in the list. Hao Xiaojiang, Chief Scientist of the State Key Laboratory of Functions and Applications of Medical Plants at GMU, Former Director of the Key Laboratory of Chemistry for Natural Products of Guizhou Province and Chinese Academy of Sciences (the Key Laboratory of Chemistry for Natural Products of GMU), was admitted as an academician of Division of Life Sciences and Medical Sciences of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.


In 1998, Researcher Hao Xiaojiang was introduced to Guizhou as a high-end talent, who established the Key Laboratory of Chemistry for Natural Products of Guizhou Province and Chinese Academy of Sciences (an independent legal entity & scientific research institution) and served as the Director. With the leadership of Hao Xiaojiang over the years, the Key Laboratory of Chemistry for Natural Products has now grown into a more complete scientific research unit integrating resource science, chemistry, pharmacology, biology and other disciplines in terms of the scale and strength. Meantime, it has conducted basic application research in major basic scientific and technical issues in the traditional Chinese medicine and ethnic medicine industries of Guizhou, providing a high-level technical support and service platform for the development of the traditional Chinese medicine and ethnic medicine industries in Guizhou, and forming the training base for high-level talents in the field of medicine. In 2015, it was renamed the Key Laboratory of Chemistry for Natural Products of Guizhou Province and Chinese Academy of Sciences (the Key Laboratory of Chemistry for Natural Products of GMU), and led by both the Government of Guizhou Province and Chinese Academy of Sciences and escrowed by GMU. In 2016, GMU integrated the high-quality resources such as pharmacy, basic medicine and translational medicine on the basis of the Key Laboratory of Chemistry for Natural Products as the State Key Laboratory Training Base of Guizhou Province and Ministry of Science and Technology, and was approved to build and operate the State Key Laboratory of Functions and Applications of Medical Plants after an application has been submitted. Researcher Hao Xiaojiang was hired as Chief Scientist.


Academician Hao Xiaojiang is one of the academic leaders in the field of phytochemistry in China. He has continuously explored new models of phytochemical research over the past 40 years, gradually established a modern phytochemical research system with integration of resources, chemistry and biology, and gained a number of original results in the research in plant defense and the discovery of natural small molecule probes for exploration of biological functions. His scientific research team has obtained more than 1,500 new natural products from plants and taken the lead in carrying out research in the alkaloids of daphniphyllum oldhami with unique molecular skeleton and complex structure in China. Their new alkaloids account for 1/3 of that of the same field globally, among which, 53 molecules with new structure types and important biological activity have been completely synthesized by the research teams at home and abroad, which has promoted the development of organic synthetic chemistry. They have also conducted systematic research in the plant-derived active ingredients against plant viruses, and discovered successively more than 190 natural products of 11 types of active ingredients against tobacco mosaic virus (TMV), which respectively act on plant viruses and plant hosts and activate plant systems to obtain resistance, and account for 13.5% of anti-TMV natural products reported globally. The candidate for new pesticide isatin ketone with strong activity against plant virus diseases and pathogenic bacteria is found among these natural products and granted the approval certificate of new pesticide registration test of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs. They have also discovered 35 types of active ingredients against tumor and virus and for neuroprotection, conducted the novel action mechanism of 10 small molecular probes such as S-3 to regulate the cellular pathways through the cooperation, and revealed new functions of potential target proteins, providing new strategies and leading molecules of drugs for prevention and treatment of diseases such as neurodegeneration, tumors and viral infections. The candidate for new drug (Phenchlobenpyrrone) of Class 1.1 against Alzheimers dementia directed primarily by Academician Hao Xiaojiang enters the clinical trials of Phase II. Moreover, he has also published 309 research papers at Nat. Cell Biol., Nat. Chem. Biol., Cell Res., Angew. Chem. Int. Ed., PNAS and other journals; he has been granted two international invention patents and 44 Chinese invention patents; he won the first prize of Yunnan Natural Science Award (the first winner) in 2003, 2009 and 2013, respectively, and the Science and Technology Innovation Award of the HO LEUNG HO LEE FOUNDATION in 2017.

Academician Hao Xiaojiang has established a bridge between the plant defense and the discovery of new biological functions and new drugs (new pesticides) with his research results in phytochemistry, expanded the scope of research and application of phytochemistry with an important role in demonstration, and contributed its own wisdom to the development of phytochemistry in China.
