Experts Gather in GMU for “Big Data and Big Health”

On June 24thand 25th, the Fifth International Conference on Translational Biomedical Informatics & the Third Worldwide Chinese Translational Biomedical Informatics WorkshopICTBI2016 & WC-TBIW2016was held in Guizhou Medical University(GMU). As a very important part ofthe first Guizhou Green Expo, the conference was hosted by Chinese Society for Cell Biology and co-organized by Guizhou Medical University (GMU), Suzhou University and the Operations Research of China. There were over 120 delegates present at the conference, among which there were over 40 leadingexperts from both China and the world.

The opening ceremony was held in GMU on June24th afternoon. Zeng Zhu, dean of School of Biological Engineering of GMU and head of Guizhou Institute of Big Data in Health-care, hosted the ceremony. Su Qing from Science and Technology Department of Guizhou, Dai Qiping from Education Department of Guizhou, and Wang Hao from Health and Family Planning Commission of Guizhou attended the ceremony.

Lin Changhu, secretaryofparty committeeof GMU, on behalf of the university, first offered his warm congratulations on the opening of the conference and then made an introduction of the history of GMU.Sun Chengyi, chairmen of local organizing committee and vice president of GMU, introduced the achievements that GMU has made in the past years by combining big data and big health in fields like policy research and consultation, talent cultivation and social service. Sun Zhirong from Chinese Society for Cell Biology shared his hope and expectations for the future of precision medicine. Gao Zhonghua from the China work committee of Human Variome Project made a brief introduction of the project and expressed his intention to cooperate with GMU. Shen Bairong from Suzhou University, president of the organization committee of the conference, briefed everyone present about the organization of the conference and he is willing to cooperate with GMU to promote the researchandapplicationofbig data in health-care in Guizhou Province.

During the conference, leading experts from University of Texas at Austin, Indiana University, University of California (San Diego), The Ohio State University, Emory University, Tsinghua University, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Fudan University, Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Yunnan University, Nanjing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics, gathered in GMU and had heated discussion and effective communicationunder the theme “ModelsforPrecision Medicine”. The experts introduced the latest development and achievements that have be made andofferedcommentsand suggestions in combining big data and big health in Guizhou in the fields of talent cultivation, discipline construction and scientific research.

The conference is a big event for the field of translational medicine, which will definitely mean a lot in deepening international exchange on big data research, promoting the development of the industry and discipline as well as strengthening the talent cultivation of the big data industry in Guizhou province.
